RNs and Ordering of X-Rays

Under the Healing Arts Radiation Protection Act (HARP Act), registered nurses are not authorized to prescribe the application of ionizing radiation to patients in Ontario. However, recent changes in Ontario legislation has enabled a new class of nurses - Registered Nurses in the Extended Class or RN(EC) - to order certain x-rays and ultrasounds.

In addition, the CMRTO Policy regarding Medical Directives for X-Rays outlines the requirements to enable a registered nurse to complete an x-ray requisition.
