Government Funds MRT Professional Practice
The Ontario provincial government has set up an Allied Health Professional Development Fund (AHPDF) to reimburse fees (up to a maximum of $1500) for professional development activities which enhance the skill, knowledge, practice and service delivery of a variety of health professionals including MRTs.
To assist members, the College recently sent each member an AHPDF application form and a letter from Joshua Tepper, Assistant Deputy Minister of the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, explaining the fund, its goals and the eligibility criteria.
College members can apply for reimbursement for professional development fees for courses, workshops or conferences attended between April 1, 2006 and March 31, 2007. Applications must be submitted directly to the AHPDF and received by fax or postmarked before March 31, 2007.
Members should direct any questions to the AHPDF help line at 905.602.6015 or toll-free at 1.866.992.6015, or by email to lsawaya@ahpdf.ca, or by the website www.ahpdf.ca.

Re-Entry to Practice Program
From time to time the College receives requests from former members of the College seeking reinstatement as MRTs after an absence from practice for more than five consecutive years.
In the past, the College offered a retraining program for former members wishing to re-enter the profession. That is no longer the case. However, the Michener Institute is offering a program called Re-Entry to Practice Program for Medical Radiation Technologists in the specialties of radiography, radiation therapy, nuclear medicine and magnetic resonance. Former members will be eligible for this program in the specialty or specialties in which they held a certificate of registration. Successful completion of this program will facilitate reinstatement with the College.
More information about this program can be obtained from Elen Moyo, Program Manager at The Michener Institute’s Centre for Continuing Professional Education, emoyo@michener.ca.

Successful Fall 2006 Workshops on Practice Assessment
Registrar Sharon Saberton and Deputy Registrar, Linda Gough, conducted a series of workshops across the province in October 2006 to introduce the execution of the multi-source feedback system. The workshops also provided members an opportunity to meet with Linda Gough who is Registrar-designate pending the retirement of Sharon Saberton in March 2007.
Workshops held in Sudbury, Thunder Bay, London, Toronto and Ottawa were attended by nearly 150 members. Each session was also attended by 2 or 3 MRTs who had volunteered and participated in the MSF pilot project conducted in 2005.
In addition, two presentations were given in Hanover and Bowmanville—attended by a further 80 people—under the auspices of the Ontario Association of Medical Radiation Technologists.
The response to the program was overwhelmingly encouraging. Requests have also been received from MRTs and hospitals who would like to have a similar workshop conducted in their city. The College is more than willing to do so if the community or facility can assemble between 30-40 MRTs to attend the session.
Of course, a number of questions and issues were raised and discussed and the College will be making available for all members a specific communication to clarify various points about the MSF program.
Some of the questions were answered in the summer edition of Insights, and a few more are answered here:
Q. Will the questionnaires and other materials be available in French?
A. Yes.
Q. How will we explain the MSF assessment questionnaire process to our patients, peers and co-workers?
A. The College will provide a short letter of explanation to patients, peers and co-workers that MRTs randomly selected to complete the MSF practice assessment will be able to distribute with the questionnaires. It will explain the purpose of the MSF practice assessment, underlining the value to you of patients, peers and co-workers completing the questionnaires.
Q. What if I am selected to undergo the MSF assessment, but I don’t have any patients to whom I can give the patient questionnaire?
A. This question was answered in the summer edition of Insights, but continues to be raised. As a reminder... Educators, application specialists, and managers in particular may have no direct patient contact and will, therefore, have difficulty fulfilling this requirement of the multi-source feedback system. The College is providing the option of requiring these College members to submit their Self-Assessment Profile, Continuous Learning Portfolio and related Quality Assurance records as an alternative.
